Meet the Practice

About Dr Peter Kane

Dr Peter Kane, an orthopaedic surgeon in Cape Town, completed his MBChB medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand in 2001 and received his FCSORTH degree in 2010, having done his practical years at the University of Stellenbosch. He is an orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in shoulders and knees, as well as shoulder and knee arthroscopic camera work and joint replacements.

‘I knew from an early age that I wanted to specialise. Orthopaedics grabbed my imagination because of its logic. I could grapple with the subject and try to work out the patterns in the various problems. I found that it was also a creative discipline and caught myself wondering about new ways to solve old problems. Shoulder and knee surgery took this a step further. I find the subject content and skills quite amazing, especially the arthroscopic work. It became a personal challenge to master these subjects.’

Dr Kane is not your ordinary orthopaedic surgeon: his approach to his patients is very personalised. He spends time with explaining the condition, treatment options and outcomes, encouraging questions so that, together with the patient, a viable and tailored treatment plan can be drafted. Dr Kane believes that surgery should be respected and is the last resort when other treatments have failed, which is why it’s imperative to work closely with each patient to construct the best course of action.

Dr Kane is a member of the HPSCA, British General Medical Council and South African Orthopaedic Association.
